Following the Sunday championship game, the United Football League’s 2024 season has come to an end. Two former Detroit Lions players were awarded some hardware at the event.

He wasn’t, however, the only former Lions player to win a championship. Birmingham also included former Detroit cornerback Mark Gilbert. Gilbert was signed by the Lions in 2021 off the practice squad of the Pittsburgh Steelers. In eight games, Gilbert recorded three tackles, one pass defensed, and one forced fumble.

But Martinez was truly the star of the show. He was selected to the All-UFL Team and won both the MVP award for the championship and regular season. It will be intriguing to watch whether that gets him another opportunity in the NFL.

Talent from the UFL has already started signing contracts with teams. After Detroit unexpectedly released UDFA James Turner, the Lions entered the fray and signed kicker Jake Bates, who will now face veteran Michael Badgley.
